A.1
MEDICAL AND DENTAL INDUSTRY IN BRAZIL
Brazil is the largest medical
market in Latin America. The total market for medical equipment
in Brazil should continue to expand in the next years, with
local production as well a sizeable import market. This market
comprises medical equipment and devices, dental equipment and
products, radiology and image diagnostic equipment and
laboratory equipment.
Brazilian medical equipment
revenues are around $ 2 bi per year. Foreign equipment sales have
traditionally been made through
Brazilian agents,
distributors and importers who sell to hospitals and
clinics. There are few high-quality Brazilian manufacturers of
advanced medical products so reliance on imports will generally
continue. Local buyers view foreign products (US, Canadian and
European) as having good quality and reliability.
There are some 3,000 equipment
and supply distributors in Brazil, but only a few can be
classified as large companies. Excluding the direct sales
networks of individual multinational manufacturers, virtually
all distributors are regional rather than national.
In addition to the attractive
size of the Brazilian medical market, exporters should consider
the opportunities offered by Mercosul, and use Brazil as a
base for export into the region. Since compulsory
product registration before sale is required in the region,
exporters should consult a
local consultant
before signing a contract with any
agent /
distributor.

Opportunities
An interesting trend in Brazil is
the growing market of the Home Health Care. Brazil now has
approximately 300 Home Health Cares, compared to almost 1,500 in
US. These organizations are being viewed as a good way to cut
hospitalization costs, while offering better services to the
patients.
The public sector may also be
focused. Of Brazil's total medical equipment sales, around 48%
were to the private health sector and 44% to the public sector
(8% were exported).

A.2 PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY IN
BRAZIL
The Brazilian pharmaceutical industry is comprised of
more than 400
companies, representing a total market value of more than $6 billion.
This market is the tenth largest in the world and the second
largest in Latin America after Mexico. Brazil is
among the five largest sellers of units. In 2002, Brazil sold
1.6
billion packages of pharmaceuticals.
Among the pharmaceutical companies, 80% are domestic and
foreigners are mostly from the United States and Europe.
Multinational companies are responsible for supplying 70% of the
internal market, not including direct sales to the government.
Taxes applied on medicines in Brazil are among the highest in
the world. The government collects over $1 billion in taxes from
the pharmaceutical sector. In 2002, Brazil's pharmaceutical net
sales reached $3.9 billion. Imports represent a large share of the market. According
to the
Syndicate of the Pharmaceutical Industry (SINDUSFARMA), total
Brazilian imports of pharmaceutical products in 2002 were
approximately $1.5 billion. Imports from the United States account for about
50%
of Brazil's imports of pharmaceutical products.
Opportunities
One of
the most problematic areas of the health
sector in Brazil is the lack of access to essential drugs
by a large portion of the country's population due to financial
constraints. Estimates vary, but various sources suggest that
40-50% of the population have limited or no access to needed
pharmaceuticals.
The
Generic Pharmaceutical Drugs appeared as a solution for this gap
and since 1999 have been created a dynamic
investment
process in the pharmaceutical market. In June 2003, considering
sales for the past 12 months, the income from this generic
pharmaceutical sector
reached $224 million, which corresponds to an increase of 47%
for the same period in 2002.
The public health care systems in
most Brazilian states purchase almost the entire production of
generic drugs as part of the government's program to distribute
medicines to the poorest.
The generic market represents today approximately 6.5% of
the total market. It is expected that in 2008, this market will
reach
sales of $1 billion. Currently, approximately 85% of the raw
materials
used in the production of generic drugs in Brazil are imported.
The production,
manufacturing,
importation, exportation and sale of any medical product,
pharmaceutical or cosmetic must be processed through authorized
companies only. Moreover, all products must be registered
with the National Agency for Sanitary Health - ANVS (the Brazilian counterpart
of the
US Food and Drug Administration).

A.3 COSMETIC INDUSTRY IN
BRAZIL
The Brazilian market of perfume,
cosmetics and personal hygiene is estimated in almost US$ 4 BI.
Imports represent around 5% of this total summounting US$ 200
MI.
There are more than 60 companies
which main business is to import and distribute these products
in Brazil. The distribution is made through more than 800
stores spread over the country.
This
sector has more than 150,000 job positions and more than 400
different foreign brands of perfumes, cosmetics and personal
hygiene are present in Brazil.
The
distribution is made by three relevant channels:
?
traditional
distribution: including wholesale and retail
?
direct
sales: sales in the customer house
?
franchise:
specialized chains
There are more than 1,200 companies actively selling in this
sector with 15 of them with revenues above US$ 30 MI and
representing more than 70% of the market.
